Peer coaching is a reciprocal process between equals. It’s about self-discovery and problem-solving, not an expert dispensing advice.

A peer coaching session works best when it has a strong structure.
Sessions have distinct phases of picking a topic, exploring options, and planning a way forward. However it’s hard to stay on time and on track.

Becoming a better coach takes reflection and focus.
Sessions should end with feedback to the both coach and coachee, and they should continually be reading and practicing their coaching skills.

Solution
Coaching a session is hard. I designed a video call platform which gives coaches structure and support – for better sessions.
Seeing the other person helps you connect with them
We built the call interface around video chat. Seeing your own face is important to assess how you are coming across.
Coaches get support at every stage of the call
They get suggestions of what to ask the coachee, and let them easily record important things they share.
Coaches often mismanaged their time in a session so I supported them by showing them exactly where they were in the session structure
Taking inspiration from calendar interfaces, I made a timeline that showed how far you were through a timeslot, so you didn’t overrun.
We also used AI transcription to give you a nudge when you should move onto the next section.
And being able to see the next sections coming up helped you think ahead.

Transcripts were post-processed to analyse cadence and content.
It’s not just what you say but how you say it. We analysed speaking rate and interruptions, and we also analysed the content, to see if coaches e.g. were asking open-ended questions, or if they were sharing advice without permission (a big no-no).

The guidance was very opinionated, based on extensive experience.

We provided lessons and tasks to complete, and gave coaches a sense of progress in their learning journey.

The LLM was restricted with its system prompt to follow the coaching principles, such as to never give advice, but explore topics socratically.

A flexible booking system to help get coaching sessions in the calendar.
We needed to pair coaches up, and give them recurring, alternating sessions, but let them change the schedule at any time. They needed to also be able to cancel or move specific sessions.

Today, RunYourself is being used by some of the world’s top brands, and getting incredible results.
Since the redesign, RunYourself has become the peer coaching platform for some fantastic companies.
Previously, when shown the platform, potential customers found the offering confusing and struggled to see the value. Since the update, great companies have joined and expanded their usage after their positive experiences.

Due to the flexible and powerful scheduling system, coaches missed less sessions.
The system let coaches pick alternating coaching sessions at any cadence, as well as being able to skip or reschedule as needed. From our collected session feedback, we saw that coaches therefore relied on each other more, felt more supported and improved faster.
